Mariposa Earrings

A butterfly per ear, woven flat in glass beads and then shaped so the wings sit at a slight angle to the lobe. The upper wing follows the monarch: burnt orange panelled in black and outlined in white beads. The lower wing breaks the rule and runs through pink, blue, yellow and green, so the pair reads as a real butterfly from across a room and as pure colour up close.

Every bead is placed by hand, which is what makes the pattern possible at this scale — the black outlines are single rows, and the wing veins are drawn in beads rather than printed.

Keep away from water, perfume, creams and hairspray, and put them on last when you get dressed. Store them flat so the wings keep their shape. Clean only with a soft dry cloth; never submerge them.

A wide, flat drop that sits along the jaw rather than hanging straight down, so it frames the face instead of lengthening it.

There is enough colour here to carry a plain outfit on its own: a black blazer, a white tank, a linen shirt. Keep the rest of the jewellery off and let the wings be the whole idea.

Hair tied back or tucked behind the ear is the way to wear them — loose hair covers the pattern that took the longest to make.
